I find LinkedIn interesting because it’s clear when someone is trying to present themselves in a certain way to attract the right connections. What happens when things this person didn’t want to draw attention to (or were actively trying to hide) come into focus?
I choose to be honest and transparent about many aspects of my life because it makes it easier for people to get to know me. Think of all the energy and time I save you because if you know the type of person that I am based on what I openly share about, it’s that much easier for you to make a decision whether to connect and engage with me or not, right?
I openly share about my faith and things that are happening in society because I want people to know that I’m not afraid to let them know what I stand for. It goes without saying that this should be done with respect.
Take my Christian worldview for example. I don’t just post about Jesus, He is the One I have placed my trust and faith in, and because I love Him, He has become the foundation of my life and everything in it, and this includes Mustard Seed IT. What does being a follower of Jesus have to do with business and IT you might ask? Everything! If a client is facing a problem, you better believe I will be praying for wisdom even as I work hard to resolve the situation. Jesus motivates me to give my best to my clients. I could give more examples, but I pray you get the idea.
Being honest could cost you, like some people may not want to connect with you or do business with you, but I firmly believe that the price a person pays for being honest is far less than the price they will pay if they’re caught curating their image. Once credibility and respect are lost, it can be very hard to gain them back.
Don’t wear a mask. Be yourself. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.
